My Toe Got Carrrrrrrred!

....and then I ran a marathon!

These last few weeks have a been a little hectic between school, work, and marathon-ing. School is out for the quarter and I couldn't be more excited for a nice little break.

A year ago I completed my first 1/2 marathon in San Francisco and did better than I thought and with the adrenaline running and endorphins high, I decided I was going to qualify for the Boston Marathon someday. So a few months ago I was still feeling ambitious about this and signed up for the Sacramento marathon--a supposed great race to qualify in. I didn't really take into account how time consuming training would be, but I was able to make it to at least 18 miles. The most I had ever run before this fall was 13.1, so 26.2 seemed very daunting. I was even more nervous that I had only gotten to 18 miles in my training. At this point I said that I just want to finish and I don't care if I qualify or not, but of course I really did want to qualify. I had to do it in 3 hours and 40 minutes.

Anyway, the day before the race I packed my bags and drove up to Sacramento, went to the expo, got more nervous as I saw all the people running it who were a little intimidating, and then it started raining. I was worrying about what I would wear, how I was going to carry my gummies with me, and what pace am I going to do?? Anyway, after I picked up my bib, etc. I headed to Jimmy's apartment where I would sleep that night.

(This part is painful.) I don't even want to talk about this too much, but pretty much Jimmy has a permit parking only parking lot and that office was closed to get a guest pass. He thought they never checked and then it started to rain a lot and the thought of running across the street to park it at Target didn't sound too appealing, SO regrettably I left the car in the lot.

I got ready for bed around 10, but was not sleepy. I had my alarm clock for 4:15 am to get ready and be dropped off at a hotel to be bussed to the start of the race at 5:15 am. Luckily I had an urge to read and thought that this might help me be more sleepy. I remembered a book I had in my car so I went down to get it and to my dismay the car was gone! AHHHHHH!!! I was freaking out. But, I was happy I discovered it then instead of the morning of the race! We were able to arrange with Jimmy's roommate to use his car in the morning thank goodness. The mean security guard at Jimmy's apt. complex told us to call the tow truck company to see when we can pick it up. I was pretty upset when I called but accidentally created some comic relief when I called and exclaimed "my tow got carrrred!!!" hahaha, Jim was in the other room trying not to laugh. I was laughing inside, but still to mad to laugh out loud! Anyway, instead of getting to bed early I think I finally fell asleep just before midnight. I didn't sleep very well at all because I was paranoid I would sleep in on accident. My first alarm went off and I popped right up! I've never felt more awake at 4:00 in the morning!

I got ready, woke Jimmy up, and drove to the hotel where I was to meet the bus. I decided to pay th $10 for this bus trip because you could only get dropped off 2 miles from the starting line if you go on your own, and quite frankly, I thought 26.2 miles was enough for one day! Anyway, we arrived there at 5:00 am and waited and waited and waited and waited some more! No bus! There was a huge team of people waiting along with a few others who had been dropped off too. Finally at 6:15 this team decided to take their bus they had come up with from Southern California even though they were told they could only be dropped off at 2 miles from the start. They invited all of us stragglers and so we piled on! The race started at 7:00 and there is absolutely no late starts--it would be cut off at 7:05. I was freaking out! I think I went pee like 5 times that morning while waiting because I was so nervous!

So we get on this bus. The bus driver has no idea where he is driving and after running a few red lights, almost running a car off the road, and almost hitting a light pole, we finally got closer to the race and were stopped into a parking lot of traffic. It's now 6:30 and we are stuck in traffic, 2 miles from the start! Luckily the bus had a toilet so I could pee one last time and we all piled out and decided we would run to the start! I couldn't believe that I would run 28.2 miles this day. We went about 1/4 mile and saw that they were bussing people to the start! What a miracle!!! So we all piled on another bus and arrived at the start at 6:52! Craaaazy!

I was so relieved to be there and relieved again to see how perfect the weather was--no rain and not very cold! Unfortunately I made the bad decision to wear a long sleeved shirt which later on through the race I couldn't take it any longer, unpinned my bib number while running and pinned it to my shorts and took my shirt off and tied it around my waist. I usually never wear just a sport's bra, but after seeing so many people who should be more self conscious than me wearing no shirts either, I felt okay doing it too. haha.

The race was pretty much the hardest thing I've ever done! It was tough! I felt pretty good the first 1/2, and then realized I had to do this all again?! As usual I started off at a faster pace. I just get to excited at first, but then slowed down towards the end. The last 6 miles were definitely the hardest. It seemed never-ending. Even up to the last mile was torture. My legs were tired and tightening up and I was just mentally and physically tired. Finally I got to the 26 mile mark and somehow mustered up energy to sprint into the end (which in my mind seemed like it would be a short distance, but it felt much longer than .2 miles). But I finally got to the finish line at 3 hours and 37 minutes! I QUALIFIED!!!! I was so happy to be done and to have accomplished my goal! After trying to catch my breath, grabbing my medal, and searching for water, I noticed my family trying to flag me down. I was greeted with a hug from my mom and  with an unintended kiss from Butters. I'm pretty sure the first thing I said was "I'm never doing this again!" My mom said something to the affect of "yeah right!" And she was right, a few hours later I was talking about the next marathon I would run! haha.

My legs were so tired I could hardly walk! I couldn't believe that I had just ran 26.2 miles for almost 4 hours straight without stopping!! And even more of a miracle was that I didn't have to pee once! It may sound silly but this was one of my biggest fears! If any of you know me well or even have just spent over an hour or 2 with me, you know that I always have to pee. I was blessed with a small bladder. I definitely didn't want to have to stop to pee during the race, so this was a relief! However, I did see a lot of people stop at the port-a-potties and even saw a guy stop on the side of the road and pee in some bushes! haha...So we took some pictures, and I accidentally cut infront of the enormous line to get pancakes, picked up the stupid car from the stupid towing company, went back to Jimmy's, I showered, and we went to In and Out. Delicious after marathon meal. I felt like I could have eaten 4 hamburgers that day and after looking at my garmin I realized why--it approximated that I burnt over 3,100 calories! Wow! I'm still eating to make up those calories!

Anyway, later we drove home--I slept--and I foam rolled, stretched and went to an Ugly Sweater Christmas party with Matt. I actually felt pretty okay that night, but the next morning was painful! I could hardly walk down stairs. By Wednesday I was able to work out a little bit and now I feel much better. My legs are still a little sore and I'm pretty sure one of my toe nails in going to fall off (gross!) but other than that, I feel great! I'm ready to start training for triathlons next! But a

So this is a really long post and I'm surprised if you actually read all of it. Good job if you did! ;-) For those of you skimming here are some pictures from that day!

I think this is when I started sprinting!
Almost to the finish!

Got my medal and ready to die.

So happy I saw my family!

Showing off my medal
So thirsty.
Stretching! My quads were shot!

Obviously checking out that hot harry chested man.

Merry Christmas

And again.

And again...definitely leaning against this railing to support me up!

Getting food...even though I had no appetite whatsoever!

Butters is scheming to steal my pancakes.

Ugly Sweater Galore!
I borrowed my mom's christmas pins, earings, and socks! I'm actually shocked I was able to lift my leg this high that night, but I wanted to show off the socks in this picture because they were just too great. Look closely and you will see they have hanging candy from the ankle. My mom has the best stuff, right down to the fabulous bow Matt is wearing on his fancy blazer.

P.S. I a big thank you to Jimmy for letting me stay with you and for staying up all night to drop me off and then waiting for an hour, plus going to the race! Wow! To my parents for coming and supporting and buying me In & Out and driving me home. To Matt for cooking me delicious chicken curry later that day which I gobbled right up! And to Butters for just being Butters!

The End!

This is good!

Sometimes when I'm trying to find distractions from homework I look at Mormon Messages online! This is one of my favorites. Perfect message for the season! I love how even the littlest good deeds can make a great impact on the lives of others. You never know how meaningful an act of kindness can be.

Okay, back to homework!...

sometimes i like to spin around on hilly gravel between on ramps and freeways and then drive tail end to the middle of the freeway...

Not really actually. Jimmy and I had a scary experience Sunday. I'm so grateful we are both okay. I think we definitely both left this experience with stronger beliefs in miracles and that Heavenly Father is watching over us! Jimmy says it best:

So Christy Tried To Kill Me

Big Sur 1/2 Marathon

This past Sunday I raced in the Monterey Big Sur 1/2 Marathon with Team Club Sport--a team organized through my work that I helped coach. It was fun! There was about 50 of us or so who joined together every Wednesday for speed workouts and every Saturday at the wee hours of the morning for our distance runs. It was a great time to see people who had never run before complete a whole 1/2 marathon! Last year I was peer pressured into joining the Team and we ran the US SF 1/2 Marathon which I loved and did surprisingly well in. So I though, hmm maybe I should keep running. I admit, I think I do love triathlons better, but they're both great!

Anyway, I went up to Monterey Saturday afternoon with Matt and went to my packet pick up and then met up with some of the other Team members for dinner.

Brian, Kareem, Matt, me, Priscilla

I think I definitely took to hear the "carb-o-loading" principle. Anyway, after dinner we went to our lovely Days Inn Hotel room where Kareem, Jordan, Priscilla, Brian, and Allie (their baby) were staying. Matt ventured on home and the rest of us started laying out all our clothes for the next day.
Kareem

Jordan-yes she included her undies! haha

Brian
Me!

I was not tired at all so Jordan and I made a run to the store and picked up pretzels and water and whatever else we needed. We ended up going to bed around 10. I slept pretty well surprisingly but some did not sleep at all worrying we would miss the race!

Priscilla got up with Allie around 4:30 and we all pretty much sprung up around that same time. We were all pretty awake for that hour, must've been the adrenaline kicking in. Anyway, we got ready, dropped off the baby, and headed to the main hotel to meet with the Team for pictures.

Part of the Team-not everybody made it over that early! 5:50 am

The Days Inn Crew. We look crazy.
I don't know why I chose to stand like a wooden soldier.

Some of the coaches!

Then we headed out closer to the starting line to do our last warm-up drills together. (tear) Everyone always made fun of me because I was never paying attention during this time. I was usually talking to somebody or goofing off and Coach Eric (the main coach) wouldn't start until I was ready and paying attention and in front of the line.

Drills! It was so cold!

Nina, Jordan, Elizabeth, and me

just some legs.

After we took pictures, visited the bathroom (I think I went like a billion times out of nervousness) we headed to our designated corral. I was in A and so I went up with Elizabeth, Eric, Brian and Kareem. Some olympic athlete shot the gun and off we went!

Our coaches told us this was a flat course, but it was not so. Rolling hills pretty much the whole time! We didn't train on any hills so I know a lot of us had issues during the run that never came up before. That was the only downer. Other than that the course was beautiful, the weather was perfect, and the small bands and bagpipes played along the run were great. I felt pretty good the first 8 miles then got a little tired. I maintained a 7:06 pace and by the end of the race averaged a 7:27 pace. I'm satisfied though. It was a good race and I beat our main coach Eric (which was a dream of mine! haha)

Anyway, I placed 10th in my age group which surprised me. Here's the results:

After the race I had a hard time wanting to eat anything, but I drank a lot of water! They had tons of food and we met up with some of the others from the Team. Everybody finished and despite any issues they had, they ran through it and finished strong!
After the Race

woohooo
Felix--he's also one of my clients. Hilarious guy.
Coach Eric, Nina, and I

It was a fun time. Now I'm kind of sad that it's over. It was fun meeting new people, running together, and supporting each other. Now I just can't wait until Tri-Training! So much fun! I also have to keep training as I have my first marathon coming up December 5th. I'm really nervous and not sure how I feel about it! I'm still super sore from the 1/2 so hopefully I'll recover quick so I can feel great for the run! I want to try and qualify for Boston...we'll see!

i love running!

....is what i tell myself when i'm running! I was really ambitious a few months back and signed myself up for a full marathon in Sacramento December 5th. I thought, hmmm...I should try to qualify for the Boston Marathon, then I can finally go to Boston! Maybe I should have just planned a Boston trip....hah...well, the truth is I actually DO like running for some strange reason. I can't quite figure out why. My friend told me the other day that he couldn't figure out why I would pay to torture myself for 3-4 hours. The only thing I could say was, well it makes me feel good about myself. He said I should just treat myself to a dinner and a movie. Though I do like taking myself out on dates, a marathon is a bit different. I feel good because I accomplished something I worked towards. There's soooo much time and training that goes into this, so when it's achieved, it's a great feeling.

Anyway, I realized I'm waaaaaay behind on my training! I've been training for the Big Sur 1/2 Marathon that's in mid-November, but realized I should be doing more miles. So this week I tried to boost my runs up a bit. Tuesday I did 13.5 miles. Wednesday speed work with Team Club Sport. Thursday rest and swim. Friday 15 miles. Saturday 10 miles. Aaaand I'm exhausted! But, not as bad as I thought! I remember how sore I was after last years 1/2 (granted it was in SF with rolling hills the whole time), but even after 15 miles, I'm not too bad! So, next week I will try to go 16-18 miles. Hopefully I can do it!

Before our run today. So cold!

Words of Wisdom from President D. Michael Stewart

I found out Saturday morning that my mission president from Temple Square passed away in his sleep this past Friday. I feel so lucky to have spent almost my whole mission with him and to have learned so much from him. He is an amazing person and I know he is serving in a greater capacity on the other side. He has been such a huge influence on my life, and I am eternally grateful for that. I decided to go through my mission journal to remember some of the words of wisdom he often repeated...

"All the water in the world however hard it tried could never sink a ship unless it got inside. All the evil in the world the blackest kind of sin, can never hurt you one least bit, unless you let it in."

6 Steps to Personal Peace

  1. Life is a process, not an event.
  2. Personal response, not heredity or environment, determines my destiny.
  3. Personal picturing counts. Our lives are what our thoughts make us.
  4. Have patience with principles. Believe in the inevitability of gradualism.
  5. The pathway to self is through others. See a need and fill it.
  6. Pursue the prompting. Follow the feeling.
8 Steps to Spirituality
  1. Pray daily.
  2. Read and ponder the scriptures daily.
  3. Attend all meetings.
  4. Keep the Sabbath spirit.
  5. Accept and magnify a church calling.
  6. Tithe your income.
  7. Be temple worthy; attend often.
  8. Seek worthy friends.
"Repentance governs man's past. Faith governs the future. The Holy Ghost governs the present."

"Sustain and Abstain. Sustain the good things of the gospel (principles of Gospel and temple). Abstain from the bad things (things that throw us off track)."

"Life is a difficult process, but it should be fun."

"Kill the pig! Replace fear with faith.
Until your slay your fears or kill your pigs, you will be miserable all your life. Don't compare yourself to others, you will either feel inferior or superior."

Faith Formula:
See (desired result in mind), say (words of faith), do (action), act (obedience, service, work, love), leave the rest to God.

Get Fear Out and Exercise Faith
  1. Know that God Exists
  2. Know that God loves you
  3. Correct idea of His character
  4. An actual knowledge that one's course fits God's will
"God takes care of those who take care of Him."

"God is the architect. Christ is the builder. The Holy Ghost is the maintenance man--He maintains it. They have given us everything we need. It's up to us to do the rest."

"Refuse to see yourself as an exception to the rule."

"Do not doubt your spiritual experiences. Do not forget them as realities. Believe they happened."

"Care! Care about everything you do."

"Weak people wait for things to happen, strong people make things happen."

"The Gospel is true because it works."

"Diamonds have many facets, as do our testimonies. There are many things that go into a testimony. There aren't boundaries on a testimony--it's ever expanding."

"Be big on the little things. Be obedient. Obedience=Peace."

"Don't gossip. If you like yourself you won't talk about others behind their backs."

"Be nice to yourself--We're really hard on ourselves, love yourself. Be nice to yourself as you are to God. How can you love your neighbor if you don't love yourself?"

"Life is a process, not an event. Look back and see how far you've come. Don't compare yourself to others."

"Don't take yourself too seriously, laugh at mistakes. You are more important than your mistakes."

"Marriage (asking us to take 1 step off Temple Square...) 3 Things to Marry the Right Person 1-Puts Jesus Christ first. Faithful. 2-Tender heart. Nice. 3-Energetic. Ambitious, has goals."

"Education. Diversify your education and resume. Add as many skills as you can. Expand your horizons (I wrote in my notes to eat sushi! haha). Read different books, different music, dances, etc. Reach beyond your comfort zone."

"Don't wait for the perfect specimen, but make sure he has those 3 things and diversify things together. Don't bend on principles."

"This is not just a religion, it's a way of life."

"Go to the temple frequently. What we learn in the temple is what we don't learn elsewhere. You can get different things out of it each time."

"The Lord gives you more than anyone else will give you."

"You are the greatest gift to give."

"God didn't make junk. You are precious."

"Do not count time, make time count!"

S.I.M.P.S.
Spiritual Goals
Intellectual Goals
Mental Goals
Physical Goals
Social Goals

President Stewart is amazing and I know I will see him again someday. I am grateful for my knowledge and testimony of the Gospel and the Plan of Happiness. It's a great comfort and peaceful feeling to know we will be with our loved ones and see our friends again after this life.
